Using CPV codes to find relevant tenders
How CPV hierarchy improves tender discovery and where keyword-only searches can miss opportunities.
Why CPV matters
The Common Procurement Vocabulary gives public buyers a shared classification system. Titles vary by language and buyer, while a CPV code creates a more stable way to search across countries.
Search broad, then narrow
Begin with the division or group that represents your market, inspect a sample of results, and record the more specific codes used by suitable buyers. A very narrow code can miss adjacent lots; a very broad one can create too much noise.
- Combine CPV with country when capacity is geographically limited
- Use keywords for product names, standards and buyer terminology
- Save both broad discovery searches and precise high-intent searches
Treat classification as a discovery aid
A buyer may select more than one CPV code or choose a broad code. Always verify the actual scope and documents. Biderra’s sector labels are an additional broad grouping and are not a legal classification.
